Our Statistical Opportunity for Students (SOS) and SOS Extension programs are designed to help UBC-V graduate students formulate and understand the statistical issues involved in their research projects and is open year-round. If you are a graduate student at UBC-V, you are eligible for consultations with an ASDa consultant to discuss your project and address your statistical questions. Following the first consultation, you will receive a written SOS summary with recommendations. After you attempt the recommendations in the SOS summary, there is further funding available through the SOS Extension program to provide additional free advice if needed (up to 3 hours).

Every year free consulting is offered by statistics students taking practicum consulting courses.
Free advice through STAT 551 starts in September and project submissions are accepted anytime from now until October 31.

Although learning a statistical software is very advantageous, it needs to be used along with an understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. You can always get an answer from running an analysis in some software but that doesn’t mean what you have done is suitable or correct. Therefore it’s strongly recommended that you consult a statistician to make sure the approach you are using is appropriate for answering your intended question of interest, for the data you have and for how the data was collected.
